BBC here for the World Cup in big double decker bus

The BBC is using a white double decker bus to help bring its coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa to life.

BBC television, radio and online journalists are travelling up to 4,000 miles on the bus across South Africa - finding out what the tournament means to South Africans and visiting tourist destinations and unusual locations along the way.

While the BBC’s Match of The Day team is based in Cape Town, the bus aims to travel via every World Cup venue city during its journey - visiting each host city on a match day to immerse itself in the live 2010 FIFA World Cup experience.

The bus departed from Cape Town on the opening day of the World Cup on 11 June and after travelling the length and breadth of the country – will arrive in Johannesburg for the final one month later. Equipped with a mobile television studio on the top deck, the bus will enable the journalists on board to broadcast into programme highlights and at half-time during live games from a range of interesting locations. Dan Walker, who presents the BBC’s Saturday lunchtime football show Football Focus, and TV presenter Rob Walker are on the bus presenting for television, while Scottish journalist and broadcaster Colin Paterson will report for Radio 5 Live.

The bus has been showcasing many of South Africa’s stunning sights and tourist attractions. With Hermanus being one of it's many high-lights, by going and viewing Great White Shark cage diving, Whale watching and enjoying wine tasting at the Hermanus Wine Valley.

Earlier this week Dan Walker visited Addo Elephant National Park, near Port Elizabeth - a popular tourist attraction in the Eastern Cape. Home to more than 450 elephants, the park boasts one of the densest African elephant populations on earth.

BBC sports journalist Paul Fletcher, who is also travelling on the bus, said: “From influential charity projects, regenerated townships and out-of-the way villages to wildlife parks, sites of historical importance and FIFA fan fests, the bus will enable us to search for the soul of the nation as Africa hosts its first World Cup.”

World Cup - what a fab first few days of action :-))

The excitement just keeps getting bigger and bigger by the day (if thats possible, cos i thought it was already at fever-pitch :-))))

Yes, ladies and gents South Africa is completely boiling over with football excitement

The first 3 days have been amazing and a huge carnival atmosphere has gripped the whole country - the opening music festival on the 10th June was enjoyed and attended by over 30,000 people, while being broadcast live on SA tv; the opening scenes and match have been very positively reported in the SA media (and I hope the same is true for the worlds media :-))

South Africa (Bafana Bafana) against Mexico was a rip roarer - with SA scoring the 1st goal after 59 minutes and what a screamingly excellent goal is was too; we thought we had it in the bag, with loads of JOY, but Mexico came back with an equaliser after about 79 minutes; the rest of the game was frantic, with each team trying to get another goal - but it ended up 1-1.

France vs. Uruguay game was a non-event and ended 0-0; which places both SA and Mexico TOP of this group - interesting.....Korea did a great job of beating Greece 2-0; Argentina gave Nigeria the run-around winning 1-0; meaning Korea are top of this group, Argentina are 2nd

England started very fast against USA but were unlucky to draw after a silly goaly fluffer 1-1.

Slovenia beat Algeria 1-0 in a good paced match; Ghana beat Serbia 1-0, meaning that Ghana are the only African country to have won their 1st match (Cameroon play against Japan on 14th June, so lets see what happens there) - and Germany gave Australia a right royal whopping, by winning 4-0.

FAMOUS people arriving in SA to watch the football grows by the minute - reportedly here already are - Roman Abramovich, Donald Trump, Prince Albert of Monaco, Naomi Campbell and John Travolta jetted here in his own 747 with wife Kelly Preston.

More World Cup info, when we have it - enjoy the games......we sure are :-))

World Cup update - with less than 2 weeks to go...

WORLD CUP - 2010 - SOUTH AFRICA - UPDATE -

With less than 2 weeks before the kick-off of the highly anticipated World Cup in South Africa, then i think its about time for an update on whats happening down here.

Are we ready for the biggest fanfare and festival of football in the world to descend upon South Africa – the 2010 World Cup -

YOU BET WE ARE!! :-))))

All the stadiums are finished; all having staged dress rehearsal matches on their pitches. Monumental improvements and building work is now completed at Airports, 100's of major roads and all sorts of infra-structure are finished. So bring on the football games!!

Even tho’ there have been mixed reports afew months ago of slow ticket sales, expensive flight tickets and over-priced accommodation, there is now thankfully price-cutting in all areas so that a much more realistic pricing structure has appeared. Which is a huge relief, as the South African World Cup is now easily affordable to ALL fans. (Plus all those doom-sayers afew years ago saying that SA could never pull it off, can now certainly eat a ton of humble pie.)

Airlines are organising more flights to South Africa than their normal scheduled flights - Air France has an extra 15 planes booked from Paris to Jo'burg and SAA has over 43,000 extra flight tickets available.

To say that the excitement has reached fever-pitch is the under-statement of the year - it is literally football, football, football all over South Africa - EVERY newspaper, every TV show, every TV advert, every car (covered in flags), every person (wearing football shirts), every street in every village, town and city is completely football mad.......it's bonkers and we are all totally enjoying the madness too. Complete strangers just keep smiling at each other - it's like we are all 10 year old kids at Christmas Eve, about to receive a fab shiny present from Santa Claus.

And (nearly) every famous person on the planet will be here to soak up the excitement too - so far confirmed are - Prince Harry and Prince William, Paris Hilton, multi-billionaires such as Roman Abramovich (he will have his 138metre ship anchoured here in Cape Town - which only has a helicopter pad, 2 swimming pools, 24 gold plated rooms and a submarine - yeah right :-)); loads of international music mega-stars and Hollywood film stars; the famous WAGs going on mega shopping sprees; heads of state from every corner of the globe; media moguls; captains of industry and high-flying A-listed stars will be glittering all over South Africa.

Then theres over 3 million seats - including half a million foreign ticket holders coming to visit South Africa - 130,000 from the USA, 100,000 from the UK, 43,000 Australia, 40,000 Germany, 36,000 Mexico, 22,000 Japan, 18,000 Brazil, 17,000 Canada, 16,000 Switzerland and many more from all corners of the globe.

The amassed international media will be here in huge numbers - for example, the BBC has a massive TV studio in a double decker bus travelling 6,000 kms to film every corner of the country over 8 weeks; TV sports commentators; newspaper journalists; camera and documentary film crews; photographers; freelance writers and bloggers and everyone thats anyone is coming to join in the party.

Across the country, 100’s of Fan Parks have been organised, mostly at large indoor halls where massive visual sound systems will broadcast all the games live. These Fan Parks are a fantastic idea, as they allow the non-ticket holders from all social back-grounds of the world to totally soak up the atmosphere and get into the football party fever. Some of the German 2006 Fan Parks had over 100,000 people at each one, that’s more than any stadium could hold.

This will also be the first ever World Cup (or world class event) where ALL the action will be broadcast in HD vision, making the TV viewing an utter pleasure to be behold - HD TV sets are selling like hot cakes the world over, so that every household will be a surround-sound visual high entertainment master-piece. The high technology that is to be used to broadcast all the action is utterly gob-smacking - 25 of the matches will be broadcast in 3D - yes 3D - outrageously excellent - the state-of-the-art 30,000m sq media centre took 6 years to build, has 2,500 full-time staff and cost a whopping R1Billion - each stadium has 32 HD cameras (some in helicopters) and will beam their footage to 2 hi-tech studios at each stadium, yes 2 studios, not 1. The data transfer rate is outstanding - at 20Gbps down fibre-optic cables, thats equal to a full length Hollywood movie being downloaded in less than 2 seconds. Most impressive!!!

World Cup merchandise is selling so fast off South African shelves that manufacturers and shops can not keep up with supplies - Edgers (a large department chain store) has already sold 1/2 million SA football shirts retailing at R600; 300,000 footballs and 152,000 vuvuzelas - while other retail chains like Makro and Game report equally high demand for all items World Cup related. TV sets and satellite dishes are in high demand and flat screen HD TV sales are up by 20%.

Oh and I nearly forgot - what about the football itself - 64 massive matches, held over 4 weeks, in 10 gleaming brand new stadiums each able to hold 55,000 to 95,000 screaming enthusiastic fans, 32 countries with squads of 24 players each, including international super-stars like Messi, Rooney, Ronaldo, Kaka, Drogba, Henry, Torres and 100's more, plus their management teams, trainers, physios; then theres all the FIFA officials, the event sponsors corporate hospitality groups like - Sony, Coca-Cola, Adidas, Visa card, Mcdonalds, Hyundai, Vodacom, Emirates, Budweiser etc.....

Music - International music stars will be performing at the Kick-off concert on the 10th June at the Orlando stadium in Soweto, Jo’burg, with – Black Eyed Peas, Shakira, Alicia Keys, John Legend, The Parlotones, Freshly Ground, Vusi Mahlasela, Juanes, Angelique Kidjo, Amaduo & Mariam, Tinariwen, Vieux Farka Toure, Soweto Gospel Choir.......

What to see and do when you are not watching a match??

Thankfully South Africa has literally 1000's of amazing activities, sights to see and experience and is an incredible adventure playground - Whale watching and Great White Shark cage diving at Hermanus, near Cape Town; Wine Tours of our 600 wine estates offering over 10,000 different award winning wines to sample; Safari parks to meet our African animals (18% of SA is a nature reserve); 1000's of sandy beaches along a stunning 2,700 km coastline; 100's of massive mountain ranges; gigantic open pretty countryside with no-one for miles; vast History and Culture; Township tours; African art, crafts and colourful imaginative creations; mouth-watering cuisine - try Springbok steaks, Ostrich, Warthog, Crocodile, Wilderbeest, Kudu, Impala, Cape Malay curries, huge lobsters and prawns, Malva pudding, Milk Tart - yummy.......; Quad Biking thro vineyards; Cessna plane flights over fantastic scenery; Kayaking and Canoeing; Horse Riding; Cape Floral Kingdom; Penguin colonies; Fishing; Scuba Diving; Tree Top canopy rope slides; Worlds highest bridge Bungee jump; luxury yachts and power-boating; World Heritage sights; Table Mountain, Robben Island, Cradle of Mankind; diamonds and gold; tropical/semi-arid deserts/Mediterranean climates; and above all it's marvelously friendly and loving people.......

Welcome to the Rainbow nation of South Africa :-))))

So let the whole country (and world) UNITE behind what is going to ultimately be the biggest marketing campaign (and party) that South Africa has ever had, with well over 4 BILLION people on the planet watching 1 whole month of non-stop SOUTH AFRICA on their TVs.

Enjoy the football, we sure will be :-)))))

2010 World Cup Football in South Africa

Ladies and gentlemen roll-up for the world’s largest sporting spectacular, which is set to explode into action in less than 455 days time. (11th June to 11th July, 2010).

The soccer FIFA World Cup is going to be utterly massive and as it will be played for the first time on the African continent, you can expect the additional thrills of African adventures like - Big 5 Safaris, Whale watching and Great White Shark cage diving to entertain you between matches.

Percy Tours recently had a 2 hour face-to-face meeting in Cape Town with the official ticket issuing company, so I am now able to tell you what is on offer and all the finer detail of how tickets will be allocated.

The most important question that people are asking is - How do we obtain tickets to watch the football?

This is a fair enough question, but there is quite a lot of other information you need to digest before we get to that issue, so let's just look at what's what.

There will be 3 million tickets issued - 1 million to be sold in South Africa, 1 million sold in the rest of the world and 1 million will be allocated to all the FIFA officials, corporate sponsors like Coca Cola, Visa Card, Adidas, Emirates and Sony, the 32 countries teams and their officials and families.

There are 10 stadiums with the opening and final game to be held in Jo'burg.

Ticket allocation will be by lottery for the “normal” tickets, by which people put their names forward for all the matches they wish to watch and then they will be pulled out of an electronic hat. For the 1 million South African tickets, these are only limited to South African citizens at a maximum of 4 tickets per household and for a maximum of 7 matches.

On the 20th February 2009, there were 800,000 tickets "released" to South African citizens and registering for these will be up to the 31st March. The 1st random lottery selection will occur on 15th April 2009 and tickets will be issued 1 year later in April 2010.

The average price of these tickets is - $139 (R973) each, with the cheapest tickets for category 4 tickets being $20 (R140) each, while the most expensive tickets for the final will be $900 (R6300). The category 4 tickets will make up 15% of all tickets sold (450,000) and will only be sold to South African citizens.

(Source – Cape Times newspaper 19th February, 2009.)

So how the heck do we all avoid such a mad random lottery process?

The easiest and simplest solution and the one that Percy Tours will be providing is by offering Hospitality Tickets that we buy now to guarantee you a seat 100% of the time. These will obviously be a little more expensive, but due to the South African FIFA World Cup only happening once in our lifetimes, I think you will agree that it will be well worth the extra money.

There are loads of different options available, so let's go through these -

There are 3 separate Hospitality options -

Private Suite - the ultimate viewing pleasure, in a private suite, with waitress service, food, drinks, air-con, tv, comfy sofas and loads more absolute luxury - you walk a few metres from your dining table, open large patio doors and your seats are right there.

Shared Suite - as above, but shared with other people, so perfect for large groups or companies wishing to spoil their staff or business clients.

Executive Hospitality - these are massive air-con luxury marquees erected in a “Soccer style Village”, literally metres outside the stadiums, where you will be dined and pampered in fabulous comfort, with bands and entertainment, bars, large lounges and communal areas. Then when the match begins you walk a short distance into the Stadium & take your seat for the game. These seats will be the closest to the pitch and are the first tier of seats up from the touch-line. Incredible viewing, I hope you will agree. :-)))

N.B - FIFA are being a little bit cheeky and many of these packages must be purchased in multiples of 4 for Shared or Executive, therefore meaning that if you just wished to watch the semi-final and final of 2 matches, you will need to buy a minimum of 4 tickets for each match - therefore meaning - 2 matches x 4 tickets = 8 tickets.

Ok, that’s the seating arrangements, now to the ways you can watch the matches.

1. The Big 5 Series - this is the utter cream-of-the-cream product - watch a staggering 36 matches. This is designed for groups of 15 to 32 seats in one go and totals 850 tickets. This being the largest single ticket allocation and with SO many matches means that it is rather costly, are you ready for the price??? $1.5million, yes you read that right $1.5million - for a Private Suite. Phew - that is quite a bit of cash.

Moving on swiftly :-))

2. Gauteng Series - watch ALL the matches in the 3 stadiums in Jo'burg and Pretoria - 21 matches in total, 550 tickets for 15 to 32 seats. Private Suites is a total price of $962,500, Shared Suite is $31,500 x minimum of 4 ticket packages = $126,000.

3. Venue Series - watch ALL the matches at ONE stadium. As there are 10 stadium and each one has different quantities of matches being played, then this means that there are loads of options and various prices, but let's just explain one so you understand the logistics and pricing.

Let's say you wished to watch all the matches in Durban which will host 7 matches and you wanted a Executive seating package - then that would be 7 matches priced at $9,800 each, with a minimum of 4 tickets purchased = 4 x $9,800 = $39,200.

4. Final Round Series - there are 3 options here -

This product is ONLY available at an Executive Hospitality level, which means a minimum of 4 tickets must be purchased.

4.1. Series 4 - watch 4 matches - Round 16, 1/4 final, Semi final & Final, going via PE, Cape Town, Ellis Park & Soccer City. Cost - $14,000 x 4 tickets = $56,000.

4.2. Series 3 - watch Cape Town & Durban Semi-Finals & Final at Soccer City. Cost - $15,000 x 4 tickets = $60,000.

4.3. Series 2 - watch Cape Town OR Durban Semi & then the Final at Soccer City. Cost - $12,000 x 4 tickets = $48,000.

5. Team Specific Series - Follow your team from venue to venue, with 2 available products -

5.1. - Team Specific Series 3 - watch JUST the first 3 Group matches of your team - OR -

5.2. - Team Specific Series 7 - watch ALL 7 matches played by your team and if they are knocked out at any stage, then you watch the Round 16 & Semi at Cape Town, before going to the final at Soccer City, Jo'burg.

Costs -
Series 3 - minimum of 4 Executive tickets x $4,500 = $18,000.
Series 7 - minimum of 4 Executive tickets x $17,500 = $70,000.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other info -

To allow you to not be constantly packing and unpacking your suitcase, how about staying in one accommodation place in one city and get flown to each match in the morning and flown back again that evening? I quite like that idea :-))

Oh and on the accommodation side of things - get this - FIFA has taken EVERY room in EVERY 5 star hotel in Cape Town - that is not only a huge amount of people staying in absolute luxury, but a city where all the partying will be done by the rich and famous (it would appear)!

So forget 5 star hotels in Cape Town, if you were on the look out for that - because it will not be available. (Other Accommodation suggestions are mentioned below).

Large Fan Parks outside each stadium will allow those without tickets to watch each game at that venue on enormous TV screens, with many additional facilities. Road closures around the venues will start 5 hours before each match.

FIFA has commissioned exclusively 32 jumbo jets from Emirates.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

To the nitty-gritty - PAYMENT conditions & rules -

Yes all this gorgeous luxury and enjoying yourself has to be paid for and FIFA is being VERY stringent in it's conditions - here's how it works -

Percy Tours applies for all your tickets, with the application process taking about 10 to 20 days - so as to make sure that terrorists, ticket touts, soccer hooligans and many other undesirables are not allowed to purchase tickets.

Then an acceptance letter is sent out - 30% deposit MUST be paid within 30 days.

Then another 30% is due before 30th June 2009,

and the final 40% is due before 30th November 2009.

If application paperwork is presented after 1st July 2009, then 60% deposit is payable within 30 days and the remaining 40% before 30th November 2009.

ANY deviation from these payment terms and your application is thrown out - with a cheeky sub-clause stating that we might not get our deposits refunded ever.

Our Hospitality tickets will be issued in January 2010, 3 months ahead of the "normal" tickets.

Percy Tours is insisting with the ticket issuing company in Cape Town that Percy Tours will personally collect these tickets IN PERSON and no 3rd party is to handle our tickets.

Lost tickets are just like lost tickets to any concert - NO entry, NO re-printed tickets, NO refund - so NO fun basically. :-(

Each ticket will have on it - ID details, embossed, fraud counter-strips and many other completely individualised and personalised details of EACH person/company that purchased the ticket, therefore, they hope, completely stopping ticket touts or anyone selling-on tickets, or stolen tickets being used by the wrong persons.

FIFA will also be strictly enforcing a policy of NO selling-on-for-profit for any tickets purchased. Minimal booking arrangement and management fees are allowed at a small add-on price of less than 1% of the ticket price, equalling about R1000 per ticket.

ALL prices quoted above are the cheapest you will obtain and are the very same prices across the entire planet that FIFA has set in place and every official ticket issuing agent will quote you these exact same prices, as we are all going straight to the official ticketing company. There will only be ONE official company in each geographically region issuing tickets.

So ladies and gents these are the rules of engagement and we had better play by their rules as they hold all the cards - or should that be TICKETS. :-))

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Percy Tours ideas and logistics (and the big advantage to YOU) -

Personally we are up for the Executive packages. Obviously we can arrange ANYTHING you want, but so as to save you all a huge amount of time, hassle, heart-ache and stress to obtain guaranteed tickets, Percy Tours will apply for ALL our required tickets in one go and "bundle" our ticket applications together. This will help everyone, as there are bound to be people who require sets of tickets that are not in multiples of 4’s. So Percy Tours will be able to “bundle” the odd numbers together and apply for you all as one collective group. :-))

What also will occur is that Percy Tours will have all our seats together in one specially allocated area, so we all know where we are sitting for meals and the matches in the stadiums.

Just to give you a small understanding of the logistics from our side - we are currently sitting on over 35 enquiries from around the world, totalling over 470 people (currently), wishing for us to assist them with their ticketing, transportation, tours, accommodation and activity requirements. Now I would be a fool to dream that all these existing 470 people will finally book with us, but we also have to consider that these are the very organised ones and Percy Tours is bound to obtain many more enquiries as the clock starts to tick down to match day and if I were realistically modest I would guess we could be looking at about 1,500 people possibly wanting our help.

Percy Tours will also be booking all your accommodation and activities that you wish to do between soccer games.

Accommodation - we deal with every conceivable type of accommodation establishment, from backpacker hostels, B&Bs, guest houses, lodges, wine farms, game parks, city apartments, beach side chalets to penthouse mansions, 1 star to 5 star hotels and everything in-between.......and in EVERY location that you wish for.

Please inform us of your budget per person per night and your desired type of accommodation in which location and we will research, arrange and book it all for you too. :-))

Activities - Not only will all the football keep you very busy, but South Africa is an adventure play-ground offering 100's of diverse activities too. Please check out our websites "What to See and Do" page, where at the bottom of the page is a clickable link to a page of 300 different things to do -
